Calories for Teen Athletes: Fueling Performance, Recovery, and Growth
Calories are one of the most important and most misunderstood parts of nutrition. A calorie is simply a unit of energy. It measures the potential energy stored in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats [7].
For active teens, that energy supports much more than practice or competition. It also supports school, daily movement, recovery, and the rapid growth and development that take place during adolescence.
This guide explains why calories matter for teen athletes, how daily needs can change with age and activity level, and how to choose high-quality sources of energy.
Why Calories Matter for Teen Athletes
Adequate energy intake is a foundational nutrition priority for every athlete. The body needs enough energy to perform, recover, and grow [1]. In practical terms, the calories consumed through food, drinks, and supplements need to keep pace with the energy used during daily life and physical activity.
When calorie intake falls short, the body has less energy available for training and recovery. Under-fueling can reduce performance, strength, and endurance. It can also make it harder to consume enough vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients [1].
The effects can be more serious during adolescence because the body is also using energy for growth and development. Inadequate energy intake in teen athletes may contribute to fatigue, muscle loss, delayed puberty, menstrual dysfunction, short stature, and a higher risk of injury or illness [3,4].
How Many Calories Do Teen Athletes Need?
Calorie needs vary based on age, sex, body size, growth rate, and activity level. General estimates can provide a starting point, but they cannot account for every athlete or every training schedule.
On average:
· Active teenage boys may require 2,600 to 3,200 calories per day.
· Active teenage girls may require 2,200 to 2,400 calories per day [9].
For teenagers who participate in heavy physical activity, estimated needs may be higher:
· Teenage boys may need 2,700 to 3,925 calories per day.
· Teenage girls may need 2,475 to 2,875 calories per day [2,8].

How Activity Changes Energy Needs
The amount of energy used during exercise depends on the activity, intensity, duration, and the athlete's body weight. The estimates below show how calorie use can vary across common sports and training activities.

Calorie Quality Matters
Meeting energy needs is important, but food quality matters too. Calories from nutrient-dense foods provide energy along with the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients that support health and development.
According to the cited U.S. Dietary Guidelines, youth calorie intake should generally be distributed across the three macronutrients as follows [9]:
· 45 to 65 percent from carbohydrates.
· 25 to 35 percent from fat.
· 10 to 35 percent from protein.
High-quality calorie sources include whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and select dairy products [5,6]. A balanced mix of carbohydrates, protein, and fat helps active teens meet both energy and nutrient needs.
